EJN Our Ocean Conference 2026 in Kenya (Fully Funded)

The applications are now open for the EJN Our Ocean Conference 2026. This fully funded conference will invite journalists from around the world to report from the Our Ocean Conference scheduled for June 16-18, 2026, in Mombasa, Kenya. There is no application fee, and all expenses, including airfare, accommodation, meals, local transport in Kenya, visa costs, and a stipend, will be provided to all participants. The 11th Our Ocean Conference–and the first to take place in Africa–will focus on the theme of ‘Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future’ and will also explore Kenya’s domestic priorities, such as elevating youth ocean leaders and strengthening collaboration to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Fellows will cover the conference and report from there.

Arrival & Departure Dates

Participants will travel to Mombasa from June 14 to June 19, 2026.

  • June 15: Orientation day with training sessions, guest speakers, and a field trip
  • June 16–18: Full participation in the conference

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Professional Status: Must be a professional journalist with an established media house, reporting from a coastal country.
  • Applications are open to journalists working in any medium (online, print, television, radio). Freelance reporters and staff from all types of media organizations—international, national, local, and community-based.
  • Experience: Proven track record of reporting on ocean issues (e.g., blue economy, sustainable fisheries, or IUU fishing).
  • Availability: Must be able to attend the full program in Mombasa from June 14–19.
  • Language: A strong command of the English language is required.
  • Project Proposal: Clear indication of the specific stories you plan to pursue during the conference.

Required Documents

  • An up-to-date CV/Resume.
  • A Letter of Support from an editor or supervisor (including for freelancers) guaranteeing publication in an established outlet.
  • Work Samples: Recent, relevant journalistic pieces focused on ocean issues published within the last 12 months. Non-English samples must include a brief English synopsis.
