- Applicants are free to choose their host institution in Japan from universities, national research institutions, or equivalent facilities in the private sector.
- It is the applicant’s responsibility to obtain acceptance from the host institution before applying to the MIF.

Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the MIF Fellowship 2027, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must be a non-Japanese citizen.
- Hold a PhD degree at the time of application.
- Be 45 years old or younger.
- Be employed full-time in their home country.
- Commit to returning to their home country after completing the fellowship.
- Have sufficient English or Japanese language proficiency.
- Obtain acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying.
- Must not have previous long-term residence experience in Japan (short visits for conferences or tourism are acceptable).
- Demonstrate strong academic and research achievements.
