The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2027–2028 are now open for international students, researchers, and artists who want to pursue advanced academic or research opportunities in Switzerland. Each year, the Swiss Confederation awards these scholarships to talented international applicants from more than 180 countries to promote international exchange and research collaboration with Swiss institutions. The program is administered by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS/ESKAS). More details are below.

Financial Support
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship will cover:
- Round Airfare Tickets
- Monthly Stipend for Expenses and Accommodation
- Housing Allowance
- One-year half-fare public transportation card.
- Health Insurance
- Some Universities cover Tuition Fees, while some do not.
Scholarship Types
1) Research Fellowship: The Research Fellowship is designed for highly qualified early-career researchers who are pursuing a PhD in their home country.
Applicants can conduct a full-time research project at eligible Swiss universities, universities of applied sciences, ETH Zurich, EPFL, or recognized research institutes within the ETH Domain.
2) PhD Scholarship: The PhD scholarship supports qualified researchers who have completed a Master’s degree and wish to pursue doctoral research at a Swiss university or recognized research institution.
The scholarship can last up to 36 months, subject to academic progress and the applicable conditions.
3) Art Scholarship: The Art Scholarship is intended for highly talented young artists who want to pursue their first Master’s degree at a Swiss art school or conservatory.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility depends on the scholarship category and country of origin.
For the 2027–2028 Research Fellowship and PhD categories, applicants generally need:
- A completed Master’s degree or equivalent by 31 July 2027 (30 June 2027 for ETH Zurich).
- To be born after 31 December 1991.
- A strong academic and research profile.
- A detailed research proposal with a timeline.
- Support from an academic supervisor at a Swiss higher education institution.
- Compliance with the specific requirements for their country of origin.
For Art Scholarships, applicants generally need a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent by 31 July 2027, must not already hold a Master’s degree, and need an admission letter or proof of application to an eligible Swiss university of the arts or music.
Important: Swiss Academic Supervisor Required
Research and PhD applicants must identify an academic supervisor in Switzerland who is willing to support and supervise their proposed research project.
Applications without the required academic supervisor will not be considered. Applicants are responsible for finding a suitable supervisor themselves.
