- It is the applicant’s responsibility to obtain acceptance from the host institution before applying to the MIF.

Eligibility Criteria
- The Fellowship is open to all Nationals except Japanese Citizens.
- Applicants must obtain acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying.
- Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (Doctoral Degree) at the time of application.
- Applicants must be 45 years old or younger at the time of application (born in or after 1980).
- Applicants must have sufficient English or Japanese language ability.
- Applicants should not have past or current experiences of staying in Japan (other than short-term stays for sightseeing or conferences).
- Applicants must have an occupation in their home countries, return there upon completing their fellowship tenure, and contribute to the development of their own country.

How to Apply for the Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship 2026?
You cannot apply online. All applicants must submit their application and documents via email to application@mif-japan.org. The results will be announced on the MIF website in late November 2025, and successful applicants will receive a letter of selection. The Link to the official website is below.
