United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2025 (Fully Funded)

Applications are open for the United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2025. It is a fully funded fellowship for the duration of the 9 months. The 9 months are divided into two phases. In Phase One, fellows will spend 3 months at DOALOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Phase two consists of a 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study training at one of the prestigious participating Host Institutions of the UN Nippon Fellowship available in Europe, the USA, Australia, Asia, Canada, and other countries.

The UN Nippon Foundation Fellowship provides training to government officials and mid-level professionals from developing countries in Ocean affairs and the law of the sea, as well as related disciplines, including marine science. Through this program, fellows will learn about international legal frameworks, key issues, and best practices in ocean affairs, and become familiar with the work of the United Nations. How UN Nippon Foundation Fellowship will Work out?

As the United Nations has its HQs in New York, so fellows will spend the first 3 months in the United Nations in New York for research and training and develop professional skills.

Later on, the next six months will be spent in the desired host institution to gain in-depth expertise. There are a total of 32 institutions around the globe that host the UNNF fellows.

Upon completion of the Fellowship, fellows are expected to return to their home countries.

  • Phase One: 3 Months of Research and Training between March/April and June at DOALOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
  • Phase Two: 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study, between July and December at one of the host institution

In return, it is expected that the fellows to provide:

  • A 100-page written thesis
  • A presentation of the research
  • An ocean governance matrix

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the fellowship, these rules will apply:

  • Be between the ages of 25 and 40.
  • You must have completed a first university degree
  • Government officials
  • Mid-level professionals from government or non-government agencies.
  • Applicants from developing countries can apply only.
  • Have an interest in the UN Nippon Foundation fellowship topics.
