What People Do Under the IMF Economist Program?

As a Young Economist at the IMF, you will join a Team of Staff who are working to address key global economic challenges. During the program, you will work closely with experienced economists.

Your responsibility is to carry out operations-related analysis, research, and policy initiatives. You’ll work closely with national governments to promote international monetary cooperation, ensure financial stability, facilitate trade, foster sustainable growth, and reduce poverty.

Duration and Rotation

The EP is a threeyear program consisting of two 18-month assignments. During the assignments, you will get to know about country-specific issues.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A recent PhD graduate or be within one year of completing your PhD in a relevant field of study.
  • Your study should be in the fields of macroeconomics, finance, public finance, monetary economics, international economics, trade, poverty issues, macro-climate, political economy, econometrics, or related areas.
  • A national of one of our IMF member countries
  • Under age 34 when you join the IMF EP program.
  • Have proven analytical, quantitative, and IT skills.
  • Willing to travel (varies based on assignment but typically one to two missions per 18-month EP assignment).

Accepting the Offer

All offers will be made in early February 2025 to support a start date in September 2025, at its Washington D.C. headquarters.
