The Australia Student Visa which is also known as Subclass (500) allows you to stay in Australia for up to 5 years to complete a full-time degree program such as Undergraduate, Masters, or PhD. With this visa, you can also work up to 48 hours a fortnight. However, students studying for master’s by research or doctoral by research have no work limit. Australia hosts the third-highest number of international students with more than 1,200 institutions and over 22,000 courses to choose from. Step-by-Step Australia Student Visa (Subclass 500) Application Process

Step 1 – Get a Letter of Offer

You will receive a Letter of confirmation from the university where you have applied. Read the letter carefully. It will contain the information about your course, fee, and timeline. It is recommended to Keep a copy of the Letter of Offer.

Step 2 – Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

You will receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) after you have accepted the Letter of Offer. You need to include a copy of your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) in the online visa application form.

Step 3 – Language Proficiency Proof

You will learn and talk in English in Australia. The Australian Government requires proof of the English Language Test. Different universities and courses have set their requirements for Language Scores.

To be eligible for the Student Visa, you need to take any one of the following tests with the minimum test score:

  • IELTS: 6.0
  • TOEFL: 64
  • Cambridge English Advance: 169
  • PTE: 50
  • Occupational English Test: B in each component

If you are a National of the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand, or the Republic of Ireland, then you are exempt from Language Test.

Step 4 – Genuine Student (GS) Requirement

The online visa form contains some questions. Your answers to those questions will determine that you are a Genuine Student. Your answers to those questions will let the visa officer know about your reasons for wanting to study in Australia.

The Genuine Student (GS) Questions cover the topics like:

  • Details of your current circumstances such as family ties, employment, etc.
  • Why did you choose this course and Australia?
  • How you will get benefits and how it will help you in the future.
  • Any other relevant information that you’d like to provide?

Step 5 – Proof of Funds

You must prove that you have enough money to support yourself in Australia throughout your stay. You can do that through the following two options:

  1. Provide bank statements or evidence of grants or scholarships.
  2. Proof of your parent or partner’s income which must be AUD$62,222 in the year immediately before you apply.

Step 6 – Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

If you do not provide proof of Overseas Student Health Cover, your visa application will be refused. Many universities in Australia that provide scholarships also cover (OSHC) such as the Australian National University AGRTP Scholarship, and the Flinders University AGRTP Scholarship.

OSHC will help you pay for medical, medicines, or hospital care while studying in Australia, and also provides you with an ambulance in an emergency.

Step 7 – Health Requirements

You may need to undergo a health examination to meet the student visa health requirement.

Step 8 – Character Requirement

In the online visa application, you have to answer some questions about your character. You will also need to upload a Police Character Certificate.
