Study in Austria Without IELTS can be a Good decision because several universities in Austria do not require IELTS from international students. Students from all over the world are attracted to the country’s excellent universities, affordable tuition fees, and beautiful scenery. Austria is located in the Central Europe. Many universities in Austria understand that not all international students have taken the standardized English proficiency test.

Instead of IELTS, they offer alternative ways to assess applicants’ English proficiency. Such as Duolingo, Interviews, and other alternatives. Moreover, international students can do part-time work in Austria for up to 20 hrs/week. If you are not a national of the EU/EEA then you can also apply for the Austria Job Seeker Visa. Similarly, some summer schools, youth programs, and internships in Austria also do not require IELTS such as the International Diplomats Conference in Austria, IST Scientific Internships, ISTernship Summer Program, and Vienna BioCenter Summer School.

How to Study in Austrian Universities Without IELTS

Not all universities require IELTS from all students. There are different circumstances and alternatives available. Here are some ways they assess English language skills instead:

Native English Speaker: If you are a Citizen of an English Speaking Country and you are applying for the higher education program in Austria, then you do not need IELTS.

Previous Education in English: If you’ve previously completed your education in an English-speaking institution, you may be exempt from taking an additional English test.

Completed Previous Education in an English-Speaking Country: If you have already completed your previous degree/school/college in a Country that is an official English-speaking country then you are also exempted from IELTS.

Alternative tests: Some universities may accept other standardized English tests like the TOEFL, Duolingo, etc. I have created a detailed post on the Duolingo English Test.

Interviews: The university may interview you in English to assess your proficiency.

Conclusion: If you are considering studying abroad, Austria is a great option. Always check the specific requirements of the universities you’re interested in applying to. Admission requirements can change.
